Black Friday
Yesterday, the day after Thanksgiving Day in America, has become known as Black Friday. It’s the busiest shopping day of the year, as retail store and shopping malls open before the sun arises and offer insane deals that most people can’t afford not to pass up. The day got its name because it has historically been the day when stores broke into profitability (”in the black”) for the full year, but many people also have other ideas why it is called “Black” Friday.
I have a love/hate relationship with the day. I hate the early mornings. I hate the crowds. I hate the over-commercialism. I love the prices. So, yes, I went out yesterday, arriving at the electronics store at 5AM in order to pick up a few things as I prepare for Christmas.
I had great success at the first store, snatching up a few things for 1/2 the normal price. When I first arrived, the line wrapped around the block but despite the mass of people, everyone was orderly and polite. I was in and out in about 20 minutes.
My next store was less successful. I went to a camera store called Ritz Camera and was waiting at the door when it opened at 6AM. They were offering an amazing deal for three Sandisk Extreme III 4GB CF cards (those are memory cards for my camera, for those who don’t know) for FREE! Basically the deal was to purchase the three cards for $60 and receive a $60 mail-in rebate. I was totally pumped because I was 5th in line. Believe it or not, by the time I got to the counter, they had sold out completely! They had only stocked enough for the first 4 people! Talk about a bait-and-switch! I’ve had gripes before with this chain of camera stores because of their lack of stock, but this was the most retarded, ridiculous ploy I have ever seen. I immediately called several other stores in the area and they sold out of stock in the first 5 minutes as well. Thanks a lot, Ritz Camera. You suck!
By the time I arrived at my next store, I was back to successful. I bought a huge Lego set for my son for Christmas for $60 when it normally retails at $100. By 6:45AM, I was finished with my shopping and ready to head to McDonald’s for breakfast and then go home and fall back asleep.
Unfortunately, Black Friday lived up to its reputation in several areas around the country. Apparently not all places were as orderly as the ones here in Arizona. Some poor guy in New York was trampled to death at a store by a mob of customers. It’s unfortunate how greed can drive people to such lengths.
