Stop Giving Me Crap About Jogging In The Winter

Ok, it’s a myth. It’s never too cold to exercise outside. My lungs won’t be damaged. I won’t end up with asthma. I don’t need to acclimatize myself to the cold. I’m not going to die. So please, for the love of all that is holy, stop ‘ya haram’-ing me when I decide to jog in the wintertime.

Dude. What are you doing jogging outside in nature, in the first place? Don’t you have a TREADMILL. Get inside where you belong.

    i always jog around 6:30am- 8:30am.

@ Hal : Having a tridmill would be nice..but jogging in the nature is way better than doing it inside the house!

Dave, now that I’ve met you I remember seeing you jogging. Good for you! I used to walk, but lost my walking buds.

Maher, where do you run ‘in nature’ in Amman? The only place I can think of is Sports City, the rest is so, ‘in city’.

Ya haram! (No not for jogging outside, for jogging while we lazy ones are sitting around reading blogs!)

Sorry to hear that Dave. If it helps to tell you that you are not alone in this issue then please proceed in reading the rest of this comment :P
Every Christmas that I happen to visit Amman, and decide to wear a T-shirt or shorts (even at home mind you) I get non-stop critisism from my family and friends: “Aren’t you cold??” “You’re going to get knee problems as you grow older!!” “You’ll catch a cold,” “Wear a scarf!” “people will laugh at you…” it never ends.
I think the key to survival in Amman’s “tsk-tsk” culture is to do your best to let things slide (easier said than done.)
My visits usually don’t exceed 3 weeks, and towards the end of my vacation I am more than keen to run away from all the scolding, and cultural faux-pas’ that I supposedly commited.
I know what I am about to advise may sound too obvious (and dangerous) but do you wear headphones as you jog? You can attempt to drown-out people’s “concerns” that way. I just pray you won’t play your music loud enough to drown-out those insane drivers, as they drive by you. I enjoy running outdoors in the winter as I don’t prespire as much. I run longer for some reason. But I shouldn’t compare SF Bay Area winters to Amman’s winters. Our temperatures as slightly steadier. Good luck, and stay happy please!
    :)

Hal, yeah, the treadmill is my fall back on those rainy days, but sometimes I just need to be outside, cold weather or no.

Qwaider, jogging is one of those “acquired taste” sports. I didn’t like it at first, but it’s easy, free and great for staying in shape.

Stephen, the hills are tough around here. I’m always out of breath.

Maher, I’m generally an evening jogger, except on Friday mornings.

    Jad, exactly.

Kinzi, if you ever want to take up jogging and need a bud, let me know.

MommaBean, I’ve got to stay fit, you know, for when those blogger meet-ups come around.

Ziad, yeah man, I jog with an iPod Shuffle. As you said, it helps drown out the noise and keeps me in rhythm.

Mac, so you want to curse in Arabic, eh? ;)

MM, Viking blood, eh? Well I do have Scandinavian ancestory. :D

Actually, running outside is probably warmer than running inside, at least in my house. The treadmill sits in the Arctic Circle, aka my bedroom, and I really have to talk myself into getting on it every day. But I do. And so it goes, this strengthening of the heart muscle.

Here is a nice little article about my mom’s boss, a runner in Alabama, that outdoor runners might appreciate.
